From Faces to Hidden Images, Children Explore New Art Forms at Gomti Book Festival
Cartoons, Colours and Creativity Light Up Day 3 of 4th Gomti Book Festival at Lucknow University

Lucknow: The third day of the Gomti Book Festival at the University of Lucknow began with a splash of imagination at ‘Chitrotsav – Draw, Doodle, Discover’. The air buzzed with excitement as hundreds of children picked up pencils and colours, ready to enter the whimsical world of cartoons.Renowned cartoonist and illustrator Ajit Narayan, along with his team, took young schoolchildren on a two-hour creative journey into forms of art they had never tried before.

In the first session, Ajit Narayan introduced children to the basics of creating cartoon characters with a variety of expressions. Starting with simple stick figures showing emotions like anger, sadness, boredom and confusion, he explained the art of “creating thousands of faces.” With sheets of paper spread before them, children then brought everyday objects like water bottles, pencils, and pens to life, turning them into cartoon characters with human emotions.

The next session introduced children to Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky’s iconic “Kandinsky Circles,” a symbol of progression and renewal. Using colours and vibrant papers, the children created their own imaginative versions of circle art. In the third session, they experimented with two different mediums—first covering their sheets with oil pastels, and then painting over them with watercolours to reveal hidden images beneath the surface, unlocking another magical layer of creativity.
